About Me

CONTACT: skc [dot] storyteller [at] gmail [dot] com

I invite you to also visit Sweet Water from the Rock: Random Musings from the Soul of a Believing Writer at http://sweetwaterfromtherock.blogspot.com/

I am a professional storyteller who is also passionate about writing, especially for children. My debut novel, UP A RUTTED ROAD, released in May 2013. THE SECOND CELLAR released in 2014. I am writing a third middle-grade novel, THE DADDY LETTERS, and researching a historical romance set in southern Indiana in 1930. I also write creative non-fiction, poetry, essays, and whatever strikes my fancy at any given moment.

Writerly Quotes

"It is the sacred duty of the writer to pay attention, to see the world."
~Trey Greer, a teacher
who taught Kate DiCamillo, which makes him important

Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it. ~C. S. Lewis

To write is to think, and to write well is to think well. ~David McCullough

No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. ~Robert Frost

Writing and rewriting are a constant search for what it is that one is saying.
~John Updike

Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass. ~Anton Chekhov

Don't just write what you know. Write what you want to find out about.
~James Scott Bell

Write like it is impossible for you to fail. Edit like you have a one-book contract.
~James Scott Bell

When you choose to write children’s books, it’s just that—it’s a choice. You do it because you love it. You do it because it fills you with passion. You do it because it brings you joy. You are among the lucky ones who live life with purpose. But you also must do everything you can possibly think of to achieve your goals. And you must be nice.
~Karen Grencik, literary agent

Write like a wind tunnel. Edit like a vacuum.
~James Scott Bell
